Characters in the Cosmos: Meet Vivian Hawk

Meet Vivian Hawk from Leslie D. Rush's Dreamwalkers. Rush is currently deep in the query trenches with the manuscript and working up notes for the prequel and the sequel for Dreamwalkers. You can follow her on Twitter @LeslieDRush.

Who are you? What do you do?
I'm Vivian Hawk. I'm an artist, a lucid dreamer, and hopefully graduating from high school before my genius-boy brother beats me to it. Brian's nine. I work in my mom's New-Age shop, but my main job is keeping him normal and maintaining our secret junk food stash in the garage.
What is your greatest fear?
Losing my mom or my brother. I can't imagine having the worst thing in my life happen again.
I'm not really fond of snakes, either.
What's the worst thing that's happened in your life? What did you learn from it?
My dad was a Navy Corpsman, and when he was killed in Iraq, my world collapsed. He was the one who taught me how to navigate my dreams, how to pass through the stars and visit my grandma on the reservation, or go to Six Flags. He taught me how to ride a bike, and how to not be afraid.
What did I learn? That your world can be snatched away forever, and you better protect your heart.
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Tough question! Until now, I would have said Mom and Brian, but now there's this guy, Lucas. He's an artist, too, Apache like my dad, and he can dreamwalk. We have a deep connection, a chemistry that's hard to explain. Plus he's totally hot!

When and where were you happiest?
Twice this week I have been majorly happy! First, when my dad showed up in one of my dreams. It was different this time, not a normal dream. Everything was clear and crackling with energy. He called it dreamwalking, and said he'd be back! Part of me suspects maybe he's alive? I can't think about that too much, because if I do, it might go away.
And then when Lucas and I were looking up stuff about a secret project, and he leaned over and kissed me... OMG, is that corny? But that's it, my two happiest moments all in one week.
What is your most treasured possession?
Oooh, there's this leather jacket that came into Mom's shop. It's soft and heavy and feels like someone has their arm around my shoulders. It looks like one my dad had--in fact, I think it really might be his, even though that's impossible, right?
What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty. And then honesty. In that order, LOL.
Tell me about your best friend. How did you meet? What do you like about this person? What do you think they like about you?
Lucas and I bumped into each other at a convenience store. Literally. I couldn't stop thinking about him, and he turned out to be the son of a friend of my dad. He's been having the same weird dreams about his father, and we are figuring out their connection to that program I mentioned. He's been through a lot, and I like Lucas because he is brave. I think he likes me because I can dreamwalk better than he can :P

What's the worst thing you've ever done to someone? Why?
I stay out of trouble, usually. But I lost my temper with this customer, Jackson Connor. He showed up a week ago, and keeps hanging around Mom. She does tarot readings for him and he buys stuff all the time. He has never done anything but be nice, but I can't stand him. I don't trust him AT ALL. So when I was telling Mom about my dream with Dad, and Douchebag Connor came barging in, I just lost it. I yelled at him to stay away from us, and Mom was so embarrassed. I haven't ever seen her this mad. So I have to go apologize to him. I am sorry for being rude, but there's something very wrong about him.
What is your ideal world?
A world where Brian and Mom are safe, I can visit Dad in my dreams, and kiss Lucas a LOT.
