Characters in the Cosmos: Meet Serafina
This week finds us visiting with Nate Koszer's super-powered Serafina from Energy Crisis Part One: Latency and its sequel, Kinetic. Currently, Koszer is querying Latency and working on Kinetic. You can find him on Twitter @natejklol or on his Website.
Who are you? What do you do?
My name is Serafina, but everyone calls me Sera. I don’t have a traditional job, but I kind of have several hundred people who follow me (as in, they basically consider me a god). I spend most of my days taking care of them. My newest project is helping them build a hydroponic garden!
What is your greatest fear?
I used to fear the three androids that controlled New Orleans, my home town. They’re destroyed now, thanks to a plan my boyfriend and I executed not too long ago. I guess now, my biggest fear is my own power. Not to be cocky, but I’m kinda really powerful. I am very strong and fast, I can fly, and I can expel concussive forces of energy from my body, not dissimilar to an explosion. Only problem is if I’m not careful, these powers can hurt myself or others. Nothing has happened yet, I hope it stays that way…
What's the worst thing that's happened in your life? What did you learn from it?
When I was six, those same three androids I mentioned earlier murdered my parents. My mom and dad were among a group of people that the military considered dangerous, and the androids were sent to execute them. For a time, all that horrible experience taught me was the feeling of revenge. However, creating the plan to destroy them wound up teaching me all about where my special abilities come from.
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
That would be my boyfriend, Naren. He can fly, like I can (he’s actually faster then I am, although I hate to admit it) but he cannot create concussive blasts of energy. He is strong, but isn’t really much for fighting. He is a master strategist, and the sweetest, most caring person I have ever met. To say my life wouldn’t be the same without him would be the understatement of the century.
When and where were you happiest?
The night after we successfully destroyed the androids. It was a complex plan that involved several super-powered individuals, including Naren and his sister, Nadine. In the 18 months Naren and I had been dating, I had never met her, just heard stories about how much of a badass she was. So, when our plan to destroy the androids was finally coming together, I couldn’t figure out if I was nervous about the fight or about meeting Nadine! When she finally showed up, she lived up to her reputation and after an exhausting fight, we put the androids down once and for all. I guess the combination of finally getting my vengeance, finally meeting Nadine, and being so exhausted was just too much. I collapsed into her arms and just started sobbing uncontrollably. I couldn’t help it, I was so happy!
What is your most treasured possession?
Probably my Kung Fu outfits. I have about a dozen of them in all sorts of colors. My followers made them for me years ago. They’re made of a really durable silk, so if I’m wearing one when I use my concussive explosion powers, they don’t completely evaporate like normal clothing does! Yay! Also, they make me look really, really cool.
What do you most value in your friends?
Openness. My friends and I are now in open rebellion against the world military. The last thing we need is to keep problems or anything that’s bothering us a secret.
Tell me about your best friend. How did you meet? What do you like about this person? What do you think they like about you?
Nadine is my best friend. We met the night after she helped Naren and I destroy the androids. She is the epitome of cool. She is a master of hand to hand combat, she can figure out complex plans and strategies with the tiniest of clues, and despite constantly yelling and cursing, never seems surprised or confused. I think she likes my empathetic nature. I care a lot about her and everyone else in my life, and I think that is still a new experience for her.
What's the worst thing you've ever done to someone? Why?
I mean, I have killed A LOT of people. Like honestly it could be thousands of lives. We’re rebelling against the world government, and the world government has a military. Countless soldiers have died at my hands, and I imagine more will meet a similar end before we are done.
What is your ideal world?
We have an older guy in our group named Symon. He told us that before the current world leader, Spidre, took over, the world was governed by a group called The United Nations. They made decisions that affected the entire world, but did so democratically, and with careful thought and planning. Having that again sounds pretty ideal.
